Veterans of the international dance world, First Position Australia directors Deborah Bacon and Katrina Riley bring a bold and visionary new approach to dance training to Australia.
Deborah Bacon has trained in Classical Ballet, National Character, contemporary, lyrical and jazz under the guidance of high profile names in the dance business. In 1996 she gained a position in the Alvin Ailey Dance programme in NYC, age 17. In the year 2000 Deborah opened the doors to a performing arts studio in the eastern suburbs of Sydney and has trained many successful students who are now dancing professionally in companies overseas. Her junior students have been part of the Australian Ballet Associate programme, and obtained scholarships into top performing arts private schools. Her studio has gone on to win at many prestigious competitions around the world, including in England, Paris, Italy and the USA. Deborah is also a registered dance teacher for the Royal Academy of Dance.
Katrina started her own training at the tender age of four, studying a broad range of dance, including Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary and National Character, taught by some of the most influential and respected teachers in Australia. During her years of training Katrina gained her Advanced in the Royal Academy Of Dance, Advanced 1 in Cecchetti and Advanced Teachers, Tap and Modern in A.D.A. (formally known as F.A.T.D.). After completing one year of full time ballet Katrina was accepted into Dance World 301 to study Classical Ballet in Melbourne and The Western Australia Performing Arts but due to injury made the difficult decision to cease her own dance career. Katrina now enjoys teaching and passing on her knowledge and experience to her students. She is passionate about preparing her students for both the joys and the challenges of a professional career in dance.Many of her students have gone on to professional careers both in Australia and overseas. Katrina has extensive experience adjudicating at eisteddfods and scholarships and brings her eye for talent and a diverse and passionate vision of dance to her role as Director at First Position Australia.
